The real cost of getting a NSW driving licence in 2026

Most price comparisons online focus only on lesson costs. The real total to go from no licence to full P2 in NSW is much higher. Here's the line-item breakdown.

Government fees (set by Service NSW)

ItemCost
Learner permit application$25
Driver Knowledge Test (DKT)$50 (free if you fail and retake within 14 days)
Practical test (P1)$84
Hazard Perception Test (HPT)$52
Provisional P1 licence$75
Provisional P2 licence$75
Government subtotal$361

Required programs

ItemCost
Safer Drivers Course (under-25s)$140
Programs subtotal$140

Lessons (the part most people focus on)

We've found the realistic range for total professional lesson cost is:

Learner typeLessonsCost (at $75/hr)
Fast adult learner6–8$450–$600
Average 17–20 year old10–14$700–$1,050
Nervous / tough test centre15–20$1,125–$1,500

Our 10-lesson Professional package is $700 — saves $50 vs. casual booking.

Other costs

  • Test Package: $290 (lesson + car for the test). Strongly recommended.
  • Logbook: $0 (provided free at Service NSW).
  • Insurance: usually a parent's policy until you get your P-plates.

All-in estimate

For a typical 17-year-old NSW learner:

CategoryCost
Government fees$361
Safer Drivers Course$140
10-lesson package$700
Test Package$290
Total$1,491

Where you can actually save

  • Skip the Test Package: saves $290 but drops pass rate from ~80% to ~55%. Not worth it.
  • Skip the SDC if over 25: optional once you're 25+.
  • Drive more between lessons: every supervised hour means fewer paid lessons.

The biggest hidden cost is failed tests. Each retake is $84 in fees plus another Test Package if you're sensible. One failed test costs more than just doing the Test Package properly the first time.
