The first lesson is the most anxious one for almost every learner. Here's exactly how it goes โ knowing what to expect kills most of the nerves.
Before the lesson
- Have your learner permit physically with you. We'll check it before starting.
- Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes โ not thongs, not heels.
- Eat something. Don't show up running on empty.
- Sleep well the night before. Mental fatigue makes the first lesson much harder.
The instructor arrives โ what happens
- Brief licence check (30 seconds).
- Short chat โ your goals, any previous driving, what you'd like to focus on.
- Walk you through the controls of the car from the passenger seat first.
- You move to the driver's seat. Adjust mirrors, seat, steering wheel. We won't move yet.
- We pick a quiet residential street โ no main roads, no roundabouts in the first lesson.
What you'll actually do in lesson 1
The first lesson is about getting comfortable. We don't do anything ambitious.
- Starting and stopping smoothly
- Steering with both hands
- Gentle acceleration and braking
- Looking ahead (not at the wheel)
- Mirror checks every 5โ10 seconds
For automatic learners, that's most of the lesson. For manual learners, we add:
- Finding the clutch's biting point
- Moving off without stalling
- Stopping with the clutch in
We won't do hill starts, parking, or main-road driving in lesson 1. Those come later, when you're ready.
How to know if the lesson went well
You probably won't feel like you've made huge progress โ that's normal. By lesson 2 you'll feel different. By lesson 4 you'll surprise yourself. The first lesson is the floor; everything builds on it.
If you didn't enjoy your first lesson, tell us. We'll re-pair you with a different instructor at no charge. We hire patient instructors for a reason and a personality mismatch isn't your fault.
